Design for a wall decoration featuring a figure of Copernicus
pen and ink drawing
18th century
A cartoon design for a wall decoration showing Nicolaus Copernicus seated with compasses in his right hand, most probably drawing the heliocentric pattern. Astronomical instruments at his feet include an armillary sphere. Copernicus is dressed in a long robe with a characteristic neck ruff and thus stylised into a 17th c. scholar. The drawing was made in the 18th c.
